Parrot, James C. papers, 1851-1875.

Bulk of the collection consists of James Parrott's Civil War letters to his wife Henrietta, includes some letters written as late as 1875 and some from his wife and son Thomas. Parrott's letters describe army life, the 7th Iowa's engagements, and many other facets of an officer's experience during the Civil War. Also contains ordnance records for Parrott's Seventh Iowa Infantry, 1863-1865.

James C. Parrott was born in Maryland and served with the 1rst United States Dragoons in the 1830s. Discharged in Iowa in 1837, he moved to Fort Madison and married Henrietta Buckhalter. They kept a store in Fort Madison and then in Keokuk. In June 1861 Parrott raised a company of men that became Company E, 7th Iowa Infantry.
